The art of circus has been kept alive for centuries, thanks to those people who believed that the human performance has no limit, and they managed to maintain this conception for generations. Thirty years ago a group of professionals led by István Kristóf created the Budapest International Circus Festival. We have high respect for our ancestors, and we would like to thank all the former leaders, circus directors, artists and supporters dedicated to circus arts for their work and commitment! We can only renew, refresh and reinterpret this miracle, what we call circus art, with the respect for the past and preservation of the merits of our ancestors.
11 January 2024 is a celebration of circus performing arts and circus science, when we open our major international exhibition of circus history in the framework of the XV Budapest International Circus Festival. For the first time, relics of Hungarian performers and circus dynasties, outstanding works of circus art and film, and the finest collectors, collections and museums of international circus heritage from abroad will be on display together. The visible wonders of the circus world are accompanied by a wealth of hands-on experiences: a 100-year-old carousel, museum games, virtual tightrope walking and group circus education, so that anyone can discover their potential as a hidden artist - or circus museologist.
The Imre Baross Artist Training Institute, which looks back on a seventy-year history, provides a uniquely high-quality training for artists, actors and background professionals. In order to continue to create a new supply of Hungarian circus art, a new school building is needed to satisfy all needs.
In a unique way in Europe, a show reminiscent of Hollywood, the Red Carpet, will be held on January 07 in the square in front of the Capital Circus of Budapest, where the world-famous artists of the 16th Budapest International Circus Festival will take part in a ceremonial setting.
The show is directed by a multiple Guinness record holder and worthy artists, the Rippel Brothers!
The Baross Imre Academy of Circus and Performing Arts presents a truly special creation for the festival’s Newcomer programme. Directed by Gábor Dénes Kovács, Tündérhon – The Fairy Circus is inspired by one of the masterpieces of Hungarian Romantic drama: Mihály Vörösmarty’s Csongor and Tünde. In a dreamlike landscape, fl esh-and-blood heroes cross paths with fairy-like beings who seem to step beyond the usual physical limits of human existence. Told in two 50-minute acts, the production draws on the full expressive range of contemporary circus, enriched by the music and movement of Hungarian folk traditions. Through this blend of disciplines, the show gently leads us back to the great questions at the heart of the original poetic work. What values guide a human life? What choices, temptations and trials await the travellers on the roads of Night, Dawn and Noon? And what wonders are promised by the golden apple tree planted by the fairies? Rather than answering in words, the performance responds through images, movement and emotion. Forty young artists of the Academy – many of whom are already building international careers – bring this fairy-world to life for the professional audience of the Budapest International Circus Festival.

In their choreography they tell the story of two people travelling through a storm: stability falters, familiar order dissolves, and everything finally resolves in a poetic waltz. The two young circus artists are graduates of the Baross Imre Academy of Circus and Performing Arts. As the fruit of their dedicated training and artistic growth, they now present a breathtaking aerial act, shining in the air like sunlight glinting on snowflakes. Their talent has been nurtured under the artistic guidance of Tünde Vincze, recipient of the Hortobágyi Károly Award. Panna has been practising pole sport since the age of seven; four years ago she added the swinging pole to her repertoire, and for the past three years she has been developing her skills in hair hang. Anna joined the Academy in the ninth grade, and for the last four years she and Panna have formed a duo in a swinging pole act. In recent years the duo has won numerous prizes at some of the world’s most prestigious international circus festivals, including Wiesbaden, Saratov, Moscow and Latina.
